First Apple iBook need info

All that I know is I have a 14" iBook model# M8413 because it's printed on the bottom. How can I find out more info so I can buy parts? The Hard drive is clicking and needs to be replaced. The OS is most likely lost and I do not have any disks with it. How do I find out which OS to put on it? Where do I buy the Apple OS?

Thanks

I have an iBook G4 Powerbook6,7

ATA MATSHITADVD-R UJ-845E

FUJITSU MHV2060ATPL

running OS 10.4.11 That's tops, in OSX for this one, I think.

Airport is built in.

1.42 GHz Power PC, 512 RAM built in, (probably could use an upgrade, but this is my back up) but mine has 2 USBs, plus a high speed USB and a Firewire port, so not sure if this will help you or not.

I did locate the following link for identifying yours, possibly.

good luck, mine is still kicking, but a bit archaic for these days.

I found a couple of sites that could be useful. Search Mac Rumors and Low End Macs (that has lots of dead links and very old Mac info... but very informative for older and ancient Mac users)

The above link might get you pointed in a better direction than I can. Scroll down about a third of the way and they discuss OS for dual USB iBooks.

Seems pricey, but maybe there are better deals somewhere. I don't have my DVDs, but if I did, I doubt it would be legal to use in yours. But, it's a start. I don't have much else, but there are websites on the right, which might help you find something a little less pricey. MacWorld is a good one, too., but I couldn't find it there. CNET is excellent for many things, they offer a download; not sure if you can do that with what you have, but here it is:http://download.cnet.com/Apple-Mac-OS-X-Tiger/3000-18513_4-10203618.html?tag=con tentBody;pop

Good luck!

All iBooks take 2.5" Parallel ATA/IDE notebook hard drives. These must fit in the 9.5mm height. http://www.ifixit.com/ has hard drive replacement instructions. Looking your model number, it is a 600 Mhz iBook. These could take up to Mac OS X 10.4.11. Some only came with a CD drive, in which case, you'd need an external Firewire DVD drive to install 10.4 or later. http://www.macsales.com/ has most of the parts you'd ever need except the operating system. This model did not have a PRAM battery, and so if the clock begins to act funny, you have to replace the logicboard. It also is Mac OS 9 bootable, however, required the original system discs to install 9 to get access to 9 either in Classic or boot mode. I would not use the original system discs though to install 9.

Here's the options for installing 10.3: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2831

and 10.4: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2541

Let us know if you do find the original discs somewhere and want to boot into 9, as additional instructions are needed before installing anything else for booting 9.
